What Does the Data Protection Act Cover?

In May 2018 the GDPR – the General Data Protection Regulations came into effect. These regulations are effective in European countries. This new set of guidelines and legislation was a massive overhaul, and made huge changes online. Up until this point, data protection laws were less cohesive, sometimes vague, out of date, and confusing for users. They changed in different regions, and made it hard for people to know what information was being collected, how it was stored, and what it was being used for. Learn more on why the GDPR is important for Australian businesses.

The Data Protection Act is the UK’s legislation to enshrine the GDPR recommendations and guidelines in law. They apply to data that moves through the UK – this means that it can affect your business, whether you’re based in the UK or not.

So, what does the Data Protection Act do? The Data Protection Act covers the gathering and use of personal information by businesses, government and organisations. Users also have the right to know what information these organisations are keeping about them. UK companies found in breach of the Act can be subject to fines and reputational damage.
