Day One
This one-day course presents the foundational concepts and techniques needed to understand and manage your emotional responses. This helps you improve focus, strengthen communication and perform at your best in high-stakes professional situations through practical exercises and reflection.
Module 1 — The importance of emotional intelligence
IQ and technical skill get you into the room but they are an unreliable predictor for how well you will perform once you are there. This module introduces emotional intelligence as the differentiator: what it is, its four competency domains, and why it matters for architects who must influence without authority and lead strong-willed technical teams. Participants explore emotional triggers, the “amygdala hijack,” and how EI can be deliberately trained.
You will be able to: explain what emotional intelligence is and why it matters to enterprise architects, recognise your own emotional triggers and early warning signals, and identify which capabilities can be deliberately developed.
Module 2 — The art of keeping and changing your focus
Focus is the engine room of emotional intelligence, and most of us very little training in using focus effectively. This module debunks the multitasking myth through hands-on experiment, then works through the three targets of attention: Self, Environment and Others. Guided practices and self-assessment snapshots build to an empathetic listening exercise.
You will be able to: explain the importance and challenges of focus, practice focused attention and open awareness, and empathetic listening, using simple but powerful techniques to bolster your self-awareness.
Module 3 — Winning conversations: it all starts with listening
Conversations drive most of the work of getting anything done, but in general we don’t approach them with the same attention and discipline we take to our other work. Working in pairs, participants practice receiving negative feedback and how to turn this into opportunities for meaningful conversation, by exploring the issues lying underneath. The module builds to the LAER cycle: Listen, Acknowledge, Explore, Respond.
You will be able to: explain why listening drives influence, resist the reflex to solve, and apply the LAER cycle in everyday professional conversations.
Module 4 — Stakeholder engagement and trust
Analysis alone won’t make you effective; stakeholders must trust you first, your competence is only a part of that. This module unpacks the building blocks of trust: results, concerns, integrity and visibility. Participants map their key stakeholders, analyse each relationship for trust-building opportunities, and prepare an impactful message.
You will be able to: explain why trust is personal and how to build it, analyse your stakeholders for trust-building opportunities, and plan a message designed for influence.
Module 5 — Reflection and review
A structured closing that turns learning into action. Participants revisit the outcomes from each module, reflect on what shifted for them, and identify the practices they will take back into their role.
You will be able to: articulate what you have learned across the course and commit to a personal plan for applying it at work.
Day One
This one-day course builds on the core emotional capabilities needed to develop influence in complex environments, equipping you with techniques to overcome resistance, align stakeholders and communicate with credibility through applied learning and real-world scenarios.
Module 1 — Understanding change resistance and how to overcome it
Resistance is rarely about the change itself; it’s about what the change threatens in people’s sense of identity, certainty, and belonging. This module delves deeper into where that pushback comes from, why people find reasons to deflect change that feels too close to home, and how the objections you hear are often the visible markers of deeper, unspoken concerns. Through practical exercises on obstacles, inaction and reversing the language you use, you’ll learn to listen for the real concern and re-engage people with their own sense of identity.
You will be able to: recognise the true source of resistance in your stakeholders and reframe your language to turn objections into engagement.
Module 2 — Develop your impact
Lasting influence is a journey, not a single conversation, and this module maps that journey through a set of repeatable enterprise design patterns. You’ll work through patterns spanning personal and shared enterprise vision, pre-existing wisdom, coalition building, executive buy-in, a co-created design charter, safe negotiation space, clear ownership, and shepherded realisation. You’ll also cover how to leave well, so the impact outlives your involvement.
You will be able to: recognise and apply the impact patterns that move an initiative forward step by step.
Module 3 — Be noticed, listened to, and followed by improving your charisma
Charisma isn’t an innate gift; it’s a set of learned behaviours built on presence, power and warmth. This module shows how your eyes, body language and voice signal each of those qualities, and how vulnerability and gratitude deepen rather than weaken your authority. Hands-on practice covers charismatic eye contact, body language, vocal power, and the pitfalls and downsides of charisma when it’s overplayed.
You will be able to: consciously use presence, power and warmth to hold a room’s attention and earn its trust.
Module 4 — Building your brand
Your organisation makes a promise, and so do you. A brand is simply that promise, kept consistently. This module explores the five dimensions of brand perception, the gap between how a brand is seen externally and internally, and how brand positioning sets you apart from others. You’ll examine brand touchpoints, the particular brand challenge facing enterprise architecture, and where your own contribution fits.
You will be able to: articulate the promise your personal and team brand makes and align your touchpoints to deliver it.
Module 5 — Reflection and review
The course closes by consolidating what you’ve learnt across change, impact, charisma and brand into a single practical picture. You’ll revisit the learning outcomes from each module and identify what you’ll carry back into your day-to-day work. The module also sets up ongoing support, including an optional two-hour follow-up session with your coach one month after the course and access to the wider coaching community.
You will be able to: turn the course into a concrete personal plan and know where to get support as you apply it.
There is no exam for this course. Once you’ve completed the course, you will be awarded a Certificate of Course Completion.
